Q2-2019 Quarterly Review

In the first video in our series we answer the questions: what is a market correction and what is a bear market? Brent outlines, in a graphical format, the ‘anatomy of a correction’ and how an investor is rewarded for spending “time in the market”, not trying to “time the market”. This is a huge challenge for investors as we’re all ‘afraid’ that a regular correction (-10% to -20%) will turn into a much larger and longer downturn (termed a ‘bear’ market). It’s much easier, however, when you are confident holding investments in quality businesses and that they will persist and thrive again when the market recovers. We always encourage our clients to resist the urge to panic and sell – we believe you will be rewarded for your discipline.

In the second segment, Brent reviews all the major market indices and how they have performed. From bonds to the various stock markets, from oil and gold to currency.  It’s a broad overview that gives a framework and idea for what type of environment we’ve been in so you have context when reviewing your portfolio’s performance. The quarter was a positive environment for all assets but it was a volatile one – April was up, May was down and June was back up again.

In the third and final segment in our series, Brent digs deeper into our model portfolios – our asset allocation positioning, where we remain in our ‘neutral’ weights, our trading in the quarter, how each model portfolio performed in the quarter and in the long-run, and how we’re positioned going forward. Holding investments in quality businesses remains our focus and our disciplined asset allocation process helps us do this. We remain confident that our portfolios will give the results you need to achieve your goals over the long-run.

Q1-2019 Quarterly Review

The first video in our series continues to feature a few interesting and curious things that crossed Brent’s desk during the quarter. Brent reviews the ever-increasing household debt levels. He looks at US vs. Canada and highlights the debt level in Canada is 170% of income and that 48% of Canadians are $200 away from insolvency. Yikes! The skills of a money manager are key when it comes to investing; quality investment decisions and sticking with a strategy are paramount so you don’t fall victim to your emotions. Remember it is “time in the market” not “timing the market” that will produce results.

In the second segment, Brent gives a high-level synopsis of the markets. You’ll see the markets were almost the exact mirror opposite of Q4-2018 with a significant rally in Q1. It took only 17 weeks to recover and reach the previous peak. Interest rates stopped increasing and this resulted in a nice rise in the bond market. We are optimistic that stock markets will continue to rise albeit with price volatility increasing as well.

In the third and final segment in our series, Brent describes the CrossPoint Financial portfolio strategy and the performance of our model portfolios. Our asset allocation (fixed income vs. equities) remains in a neutral position and we continue to overweight the US and Europe and underweight Canada. We hit our 1-year return targets in the first 3 months of 2019 and therefore continue to be cautiously optimistic in our positions. Trades resulted in us decreasing equities and increasing fixed income and alternatives as a step toward reducing risk exposure.

We remain confident that the key to our clients’ successes are holding quality businesses for the long run and we encourage you to review our model performance in detail within the video or download the slides (PDF’s).

Q4-2018 Quarterly Review

The first video in our series continues to feature a few interesting and curious things that crossed Brent’s desk during the quarter. Brent highlights the thoughts of Jack Bogle (who, sadly, passed away on Jan. 16th) of Vanguard regarding Passive vs. Active investing and what the future may look like if passive investing continues to grow and attains a critical mass of assets. You’ll see an interesting chart showing the changing size of each sector of the S&P 500 since the 2008 market crash and another chart showing that more than 50% of stocks in the S&P are in bear market territory right now. You might be interested to hear what the phrase “bear market” really means and why it’s used!

In Part 2, Brent gives a high-level synopsis of the markets. You’ll see how 2018 was a very challenging year, one of the worst years in recent history. We experienced, for the first time since 2000, two separate drawdowns of more than 10%. Value stocks, which we generally favour, were down as well, but not as much as Growth stocks. These declines were broadly felt across all sectors…a reminder that it was across the board and not a result of investment selection. Now, How we react to declines and ensuring we’re not guided by emotions alone, is the key to our success going forward.

In Part 3, the final video in our series, Brent describes the Vandermeer Wealth Management portfolio strategy and the performance of our model portfolios. We’ve moved our asset allocation to a neutral position (no longer overweight equities) to mitigate negative market performance. There have been no changes to positions in the portfolios in Q4 and we remain very confident in the investments and businesses we own. We may not have seen large upside gains this year, but we’re experiencing significantly less downside. We are really pleased with this as it’s long been our objective to minimize volatility to help you stay the course.

Stay tuned for a webcast about alternative investing and what were doing in that model portfolio. Think: commodities, physical real estate, and market neutral hedge funds. Why is this important? Because they move in different directions from the market and can provide sustainable returns that adds value to the overall portfolio.

Q3-2018 Quarterly Review

The first video in our series continues to feature a few interesting and curious things that crossed Brent’s desk during the quarter. Real Estate never ceases to amaze with cities still growing at rapid paces. Toronto, Canada leads North America for the # of cranes helping to grow the city. Another look at market domination both with Amazon having 50% of the e-commerce market and with Apple being the first company to reach 1 Trillion in valuation. Brent takes a walk through the Market Cap Milestone timeline dating back to 1781 when the first 1 million in valuation occurred.

In Part 2, Brent gives a high-level synopsis of the markets. He takes a look at how (1) US-China tariffs evolve as the trade wars advance, (2) energy prices rebound, (3) the bond yield curve continues to flatten, (4) emerging markets exhibit dramatic volatility and (5) the Bond/Equity correlation are showing a rare convergence. The key takeaways for portfolio positioning include: Inflation is going higher meaning rates will increase…Equities have upside but with similar downside risk… International stocks remain the most attractive…Never forget your defense and it isn’t time to be chasing returns and adding risk.

In Part 3, the final video in our series, we describe the Vandermeer Wealth Management portfolio strategy and the performance of our models. We remain in the “favoured zone”, positive on markets and staying invested. Our portfolio allocations remain unchanged; over-weighted internationally and underweight in Canadian equities. There were no trades this quarter and we are seeing some evidence of increased risk, therefore, some changes are anticipated for next quarter. Returns over the quarter were up 1.1% and 5.6% over the year.

Q2-2018 Quarterly Review

The first video in our series continues to feature a few interesting things that crossed Brent’s desk during the quarter. Ever wonder what market domination looks like? Google dominates the charts for internet searches! It sure has been a hot summer so far and this intense heat is not only hitting Ottawa – Brent shows a map of global temperatures. Then, what better way to combat heat than a cold beer! Check out the costs of these tasty beverages around the world! Lastly, after all that beer let’s burn some calories with the Tour de France, incredible cyclists competing every day for 3 weeks.

In Part 2 Brent gives a high-level synopsis of the markets. A look at interest rates, lower unemployment in the US and inflation trending higher which could turn into a risk for the economy; we think the Fed is behind the curve in terms of interest rate increases and Canada will need to follow suit to protect the value of the Loonie. Trade wars increased this quarter and we outline a few of the sectors at greatest risk with tariffs being placed on them. Dividend stocks underperformed and Bonds were flat. Canadian stocks had a good quarter, oil was up and gold had a weak quarter.

In Part 3, the final video in our series, we describe the Vandermeer Wealth Management portfolio strategy and the performance of our models. We remain in favour of markets and staying invested. Our portfolio allocations remain unchanged; namely over-weighted internationally, slightly over in the US and underweight in Canadian equities. We had no trades this quarter and are looking at increasing our alternative weightings soon in anticipation of potential downward movement in the markets. Returns over the quarter were up 1.9%.

Q1-2018 Quarterly Review

Part 1 Q1-2018

The first video in our series continues to feature a few interesting things that crossed Brent’s desk during the quarter. This quarter it is all about debt, although not a new topic, it remains a looming problem. Also featured is the future of farming automation and some justification for our investment interest in agriculture.

Part 2 Q1-2018

In Part 2 Brent gives a high level synopsis of the markets. The S&P dropped in value and we witnessed increased volatility. It is looking like there is a valuation adjustment taking place but we believe equity markets can refocus on strong earnings growth and strong economic growth and that they will deliver a positive return for investors in 2018.

Part 3 Q1-2018

In Part 3, the final video in our series, we describe the Vandermeer Wealth Management portfolio strategy and the performance of our models. We are in favour of markets and staying invested. The risk of a recession remains low. We continue to remain focused on asset allocation and quality businesses which will generate greater returns and allow you to achieve your goals.

Q4 2017

We are pleased to share with you the final quarterly review and commentary of the 2017.

The first video in our series continues to feature a few interesting things that crossed Brent’s desk during the quarter. Specifically, Brent highlights some interesting, fun and enlightening facts such as:

  • outlining how many billion dollar “Unicorn” companies there are right now,
  • a spotlight on the Queen and her long reign that has outlasted 15 US presidents,
  • an interesting debt graphic showing that Canadians hold the highest household debt levels, and finally
  • asks whether you are getting enough sleep and what sleep deprivation can do to you.

Part 1 Q4-2017

In Part 2 Brent gives a high level synopsis of the markets. This quarter, similar to the rest of the year, has been very good for markets. Equity markets were amazing all around the globe, and we will see interest rates rising as a result. Currencies were a major factor in the performance numbers and we will continue to watch if a market correction is on the horizon. That said, the economic outlook looks good!

Part 2 Q4-2017

In Part 3, the final video in our series, we describe the Vandermeer Wealth Management portfolio strategy and the performance of our models. Similar to Q3 we remain in favour of equities; there is a “green light” with some concerns. Equities remain overweight and the fixed income model did very well even though bonds were down. We continue to remain focused on asset allocation and quality businesses which will generate greater returns and allow you to achieve your goals.

Part 3 Q4-2017

Q3 2017

We are pleased to share with you our the quarterly review and commentary of the third quarter of 2017.

The first video in our series continues to feature a few interesting things that crossed Brent’s desk during the quarter. Specifically, Brent highlights a very interesting visual depiction of what the 20 Trillion US debt level looks like if you were to stack $100 bills. It’s staggering. Also highlighted is the housing market and the benefits this industry has seen due to central bank actions (i.e. buying debt out of the market, lowering interest rates, etc) and the draws attention to the recent trend reversal in Toronto housing growth rates. This might be the sign of a larger change in direction?

Part 1 Q3-2017

In Part 2 Brent gives a high level synopsis of the markets. This quarter, similar to the previous 2, has been very good for markets. We saw 2 headwinds; rising interest rates and a currency swing with the CAD rising dramatically. People often ask; is there going to be a market correction? We continue to watch for indicators of this and some of these include: typical signs of a recession, the Purchasing Managers Index and company earnings levels. Time will tell, but we are pleased with the outlook ahead.

Part 2 Q3-2017

In Part 3, the final video in our series, we describe the Vandermeer Wealth Management portfolio strategy and the performance of our models. We remain in favour of equities, with some concerns about mid-term volatility. We are confident in the positions we own but have made a few adjustments to US equities and added to the Alternative models with some risk reducing strategies to further insulate portfolios for this mid-term market volatility. We continue to remain focused on asset allocation and quality businesses which will generate greater returns and allow you to achieve your goals.

Part 3 Q3-2017

Q2 2017

We are pleased to share with you our the quarterly review and commentary of the second quarter of 2017.

This quarter highlights Canada’s rating with respect to global positive influence, the top 5 tech companies and an interesting fact about their revenues and some really cool visuals of the world’s population density.

Part 1 Q1-2017

In Part 2 Brent gives a high level synopsis of the markets, focusing on Canadian, US and Global equity markets, Oil, and Gold. Looking at the BIG picture as a segue to our portfolio performance. Volatility remained low and long-term investors are positioned to receive positive returns. Staying invested is important, history shows this – have a look.

Part 2 Q1-2017

In Part 3, the final video in our series, we describe the Vandermeer Wealth Management portfolio strategy and the performance of our models. We remain in favour of equities, with some concerns. We review some trade information and highlight “what you own” and continue to focus on asset allocation. We are invested in good businesses and continue to recommend that our clients remain invested for the long-term, which will generate greater returns and allow you to achieve your goals.
